Community work

Gimbebé for Ukraine

The educational community of Gimbebé, made up by the management, teaching and non-teaching staff and the Families’ Association (AMPA), expresses its solidarity with the refugees from Ukraine (mothers, grandparents, and childrens)

We offered our help to the Ukrainian Consulate in Barcelona to be able to welcome children in our facilities.

We established two lines of action in order to do this. Either by hosting a Ukrainian family or contributing economically to fundraise our social project to accommodate several families with children in bungalows.

On 30 June Gimbebé’s social project to help Ukrainian children, their mothers and some relatives has come to an end.

Gimbebé and its partners were touched by the news and images coming from the armed conflict in Ukraine and launched a community project to help a small group of Ukrainians to flee their country. Gimbebé reached out and managed to fundraise 25.298 Euros.

Our help was limited in time and effort, but it has paid off. As we have been able to help for three months to 12 families in need, by providing accommodation, maintenance, schooling the children, and supporting them to access the Spanish health care system as well as assisting them to access a more permanent solution according to their needs.

At the beginning of May, we had a meeting in Gimbebé, with the group of Ukrainian refugees, the representatives from the Gavà City Hall, the Red Cross, the foster families, the President of Gimbebé’s parent’s association, an interpreter and Gimbebé’s management, to inform the whole group about their options to continue in Spain. Those were:

  • to join the Spanish Refugee Programme, coordinated by the Red Cross
  • to join the Obra Social La Caixa “family seeks family” programme
  • or to continue with individual support.

The representatives of Gavà City Hall strongly recommended the group join the Red Cross programme as in their opinion was the safest way to guarantee access to social protection.

During the following days, none of the families joined the Red Cross, although some considered it the last option. Most of the families have joined the Obra Social La Caixa.

RELEASE 23/03/2022

Hi everyone!

According to the latest news, 2 buses have already departed from the border in Poland to Gavà Mar. We have been provided with a provisional list of the people arriving, and we have noticed that there are whole families (mother, children, and grandmother/grandfather) who, for their welfare, will require to be placed together. We are working to draw up a distribution that best suits the needs. Arrival is scheduled for Friday morning (still to be confirmed).

If you have any clothes, footwear (warm and summer, all sizes, for children and adults), toys, or parapharmacy products to donate, you can start preparing them and we will let you know when you can bring them to the school, depending on the luggage or belongings brought by the group.

On the other hand, today at midday, the school management and the Families’ Association are meeting the department of Social Welfare of the Gavà Town Council to coordinate the logistics of the group and agree on issues of aid, medium/long-term accommodation, schooling and job placement, among others. The meeting will also be attended by representatives of neighbourhood associations and people who are coordinating other refugee groups. We will keep you posted.

Finally, the fundraising so far stands at €16,200. Bravo, we’re getting closer to our goal!

    Dear families,

On 11 March we sent you a request for help to be able to support the project promoted by Gimbebé and the AMPA, to welcome mothers with their children from Ukraine.

We will keep you up to date on actions carried out on the WhatsApp group together with the needs that arise to make the reception of these children and their mothers more comfortable: food, clothes, medicine, toys, etc.

We would like to tell you in advance  that:

1.- At the time of writing this, we had already collected 13,000 euros of the 20,000 euros we had set as our goal, and we have already paid the first month’s rent for the bungalows amounting to 2,700 euros.

2.- The whole group is expected to arrive on Friday 25 March, to be distributed among the families who have applied to welcome these families and those that are to occupy the bungalows.

3.- Since 7 March, Anna, a 26 year old who is pregnant and has a 2 year old son, from Kiev, has been staying with a family of the Gimbebé Educational Community.

4.- Following the experience we have had with Anna’s reception, the week that starts tomorrow will bring with it basic and urgent needs to meet the shortages of the basic necessities these families have, which is why we ask you to be sure to keep an eye on the WhatsApp group, through which we will request and coordinate these needs. No doubt we will all be pleased to be able to do our bit to make their situation less painful.
